Cold brew coffee, in addition to iced coffee (also called ice brew), is a refreshing coffee preparation method for hot days. Cold-brew is prepared with cold water and an extraction time of at least twelve hours. But what exactly is cold brew and what makes it so good? In addition to the most important facts, we will tell you how you can easily prepare cold brew yourself at home. We’ll show you how it’s done!
What is cold brew coffee?
The name already gives it away: Cold-brew is a collective term for all coffee brewing methods that use cold water (usually room temperature) to dissolve flavors and aromas from ground coffee.
Cold Brew is not brewed with hot water, as we know it from filter coffee, but extracted over several hours in cold water. It contains about 70% fewer acids and bitter substances than coffee that has been brewed with hot water and tastes really fruity and refreshing.
The coffee is gradually extracted. The “brewing process” takes longer with this type of brewing, since the water temperature acts as a catalyst for the extraction and hot water accelerates it considerably. Most methods should allow 12-24 hours.
The enjoyment process afterward is much faster: Take the storage container out of the refrigerator, pour in, refine as you wish, and enjoy!
How to make cold brew coffee: In short
- Take 100 g of coffee (coarsely grind) and mix it with 1 liter of water, then stir well.
- Cover your preparation vessel and let the coffee steep in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours.
- Filter the cold-extracted coffee.
- Enjoy the finished cold brew pure or pimp it with fruit juices!

For cold brew coffee, you need 100 g of coffee and 1 liter of cold water. We recommend a coarse grind.
☝️ Would you like to spice up your cold brew later with juices and the like? To do this, we recommend making a cold brew concentrate and using 200 g of coffee per 1 liter of water.
How to make cold brew coffee: Step 2
Put the ground coffee in the strainer of your cold brew maker and fill it up with 1 liter of water, stirring as well as possible. Make sure the coffee powder is completely covered.

Close the brewer and let the coffee sit in the refrigerator for at least 12 hours. Then you can remove the sieve with the coffee powder.

What makes cold-brewed coffee so good?
The taste makes it very clear that this is pure coffee. The aromas that we like in normal coffee are also found in cold brew.
Because the brewing process takes place with cold water, significantly fewer undesirable components are released from the coffee. About 70% less bitter substances and acids are to be found in cold brew than in classically brewed coffee! Cold brew coffee is therefore often experienced as more digestible and gentle on the stomach.
Cold-brewed coffee is often described as refreshing and perceived as very mild. A note of caramel can also be clearly tasted, which makes the cold coffee very delicious, especially in combination with milk or plant-based drinks (e.g. oat, soy, or almond drink).
The possible uses are significantly greater than with hot coffee. Drink cold brew inside or “on the rocks” with ice cubes!
But it is also ideal as a base for iced coffee or cocktails and long drinks with a great coffee note.
The advantage: the coffee can be kept in the refrigerator for quite some time! So if you have some reserve, you won’t run out of supplies anytime soon 🙂
What about the caffeine content in cold brew coffee?
Some say that cold brew has more caffeine than regular coffee. Others see no difference in the amount of caffeine. We are convinced: it wakes you up!
Cold brew coffee is a delicious soft drink on ice. But even when heated afterward, it tastes very tasty and retains its mild properties.
Tips: How to make cold brew coffee
Have you got a desire for coffee? Making this delicious coffee trend couldn’t be easier. You don’t have to be a barista – we promise! Apart from coffee, grinder, filter and filter paper, and a few vessels, you don’t need any other equipment to prepare cold brew coffee.
# 1 Use good coffee beans for your cold brew coffee
Before you start brewing, get sensible beans that have been organically grown and gently roasted using the long-term drum roasting process.
This is the only way that the aromas in your cold brew can develop extensively. Unfortunately, you will hardly find this quality in the supermarket. In coffee roasters, on the other hand, it does.
# 2 Select a coarse cold brew grind
Coarsely grind the coffee beans with a grinder – roughly the texture of brown sugar. If the coffee grounds are ground too finely, the coffee will over-extract.
The finer the beans are ground, the tart the taste will be.
# 3 Coffee-water mixing ratio 1:10 for delicious cold brew coffee
We recommend a mixing ratio of coffee and water of about 1:10. For example, 100 grams of coffee in 1 liter of water. If you like your cold brew coffee a little milder or stronger, feel free to experiment a little with the quantities.
If your water is hard, as in many regions in Germany, ideally use filtered water for preparation. This will prevent the fine acids and fruit notes in the coffee from being neutralized and the cold-brewed coffee tasting bland and chalky.
This is how it works: Pour the water into a vessel and then add the freshly ground coffee. Gently stir the coffee and water mixture with a spoon.
Now close tightly and let stand at room temperature for about 12 hours. The water now slowly dissolves the delicious components from the coffee.
And, yes, the caffeine too – don’t worry! 😉 This makes the cold-brewed coffee incredibly soft and almost sweet-tasting. And you will see that this coffee-making method has a lot to offer.
# 4 Wait 12 hours, then filter your cold brew
10..11..12 hours later: You can now filter the coffee mixture. This is probably the hardest task. The solution that has proven itself for us is to filter with a commercially available coffee filter and filter paper. It may well be that:
it takes a long time for the mixture to flow through the filter gets clogged in between and you have to take a new one you may even need several passes
But we can assure you that the effort is worth it: With this method, you filter out any turbidity that would be left behind, for example, when filtering with a French press or a metal filter.
Tip: Of course, 12 hours is a certain amount of time. So it’s best to prepare your cold brew overnight. So you have your caffeine boost ready in the morning, which also refreshes you.
Another advantage: The cold brew coffee can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. If you prepare a little more right away, you will save a lot of time in the morning.
# 5 The time has come: serve and enjoy your cold brew coffee!
Enjoy your cold brew traditionally over ice. Simply put a few ice cubes in a glass and add coffee. If you like, you can of course also enjoy it neat or add a dash of milk or plant-based drinks (e.g. oat, soy or almond drink).
For cow’s milk, it is best to use one with a higher fat content (3.5-3.8% fat). Fat is and remains a flavor carrier and your coffee enjoyment becomes even more intense.
Insider tip if the ice cubes make your coffee too watery for you: Cool your cold brew with homemade coffee ice cubes. Simply pour a little of your cold brew into an ice cube mold and put it in the freezer compartment.
#6 Warming cold brew?
Do you love the great properties of the cold coffee wonder and don’t want to do without a warming feeling of wellbeing?
No problem. There are several ways to gently warm your homemade cold brew coffee. Either you make a stronger concentrate and add about 80 degrees hot water or you warm your milk or plant-based drinks before you mix them with your cold brew.
Extra tip: If your cold brew is too strong, you can simply dilute it with water.
